Solstice was one of my most challenging and rewarding solo performances to date! Since returning to Barbados, I tend to teach more than I sing. Solstice was the result of pent up creativity and a burning need to explore. I planned and produced the entire show and it was a great success!
The programme was quite eclectic – the backing ensemble was the 3-piece jazz combo The Original Unit along with percussionist Mario Porchetta. With them I performed reinvented versions of ‘Bridgetown Market’ (Barbadian Folk), ‘Love Me Still’ (Chaka Khan), ‘A Thousand Years’ (Sting), ‘The Summer Knows’ (Michel Legrand), ‘Aicha’ (Khaled), works by Samuel Barber, and original songs by myself.
I also shared the stage with the poets of Iron Sharpen Iron – DJ Simmons and Adrian Green (also our gracious MC for the night), Mistral Baldeo (steel pan), Goggie Ifill (djembe) and Marie-Jean Romain (vocals and guitar).
